Clermont - Bike TT result

The course was a sunny, moderately windy, and hilly 17.8km loop. Thanks to the great coaching staff we have here with us, everyone was well looked after and it was a safe and fun practice. Courtesy of the great coach Craig Taylor of the RTC Guelph (and Jason Wilson's powertap) here are the times*

*everyone has put in a solid block of training so far and effort level was up to the athlete, just some cool data to look at!

- an interesting side note and comment relating to Simons Whitfield's post about a time standard for cycling not yet being instigated for World Cup entry. If you assume the we can keep up the pace for another 2.2km,  multiply the times by 12.36% (2.2km/17.8km-at pace) on this training effort. How many of our young canucks would make a WC standard? Our top time was by Marc-Antoine Christin with a TT time converting to 30mins 46secs for 20km TT. Looks like some strong fitness from everyone. Just a cool thought.
peace.

  1. Great stuff Cole, curious what your opinion is, what should the standards be? what's your "time budget" suggestion. my numbers, especially for cycling, were pretty random.

great ride by Marc- Antoine, crushed it. Levi style (small dude, big power).

now if we could just get our rides together.... (when I was your age.....)

  2. I think a time standard/qualification should definitely be put in place for cycling, mostly because neglecting this gives a skewed perspective on what kind of athlete is ideal for entry into an elite level race. Realistically, a watt/kilo rating may not work on the grand scale of things getting readings for everyone may be difficult, and what number is a good enough number?. A 20km TT would have to have rules set into play as well, with no aero helmets/ TT bikes because this would give an unfair advantage to certain athletes with access to those sorts of things. Another factor to consider would be the conditions, flat course? windy course? so where is the line drawn.. A large part of triathlon though is the stop-go style of racing but it's hard to have a standardized test that'll replicate those conditions. Maybe it should be mandatory for athlete's to have some results (and within a top bracket at a respectable Cat. level) in some sanctioned crit races. If it were a 20km TT 31.mins is a strong time that would mark the racer at least at an acceptable level and definitely isn't out of reach.
With a time budget the 750m,3000m-18.00min is a pretty good number as far as i can tell, obviously it could be fine tuned after it's tested out a bit.
After athlete's with a certain budget post a number of results this could be plotted out graphically to see the trend and what needs to be worked out, or whether it works at all.
In the end though there has to be a discretionary qualification option as well for those who have extenuating circumstances, this could be put up to the national governing body.
Those are just some thoughts I guess. It would be really cool to see if this goes somewhere...
Hopefully this season we'll be able to get a ride in together and see what kind of times are fast enough to stay in the game when it counts!
